FAQs
Before your first session.
Starting therapy comes with a lot of unknowns. Here are honest answers to the questions people ask most.

Get in touchHow do I get started?
Reach out through the contact page, by email, or by phone to set up a free 15-minute consultation. We'll talk briefly about what you're looking for, I'll answer your questions, and if it feels like a fit, we'll schedule a first session.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know each other. I'll ask what's bringing you in and what you'd like to be different. You can ask me anything, including about my approach and experience. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to.
How does virtual therapy work?
Sessions happen over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll get a link before each session, and all you need is a private space, a decent internet connection, and a device with a camera.
Research shows video therapy works as well as in-person for most concerns. It also means you can meet from anywhere in Colorado without driving to an office.
What is EMDR, and is it right for me?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain finish processing experiences that got stuck, so they stop running the show. It uses gentle back-and-forth movement while you briefly bring a memory to mind, and it doesn't depend on talking through every detail of what happened.
It's one of the most studied treatments for trauma, and it's helpful for anxiety and stuck patterns too. We'll talk about whether it fits what you're working on before we start.
Do you take insurance?
I'm an out-of-network provider, which means I don't bill insurance directly. Many plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network therapy, and I'll provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) each month that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
Before we start, it's worth calling your plan and asking: Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? What's my deductible? What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed? Rates and your Good Faith Estimate rights are on the Services & Rates page.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy stays between us, with a few legally required exceptions: if there's risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. I'll go over confidentiality in detail in our first session so there are no surprises.
What is perinatal mental health?
Perinatal means the period during pregnancy and the first year or so after birth. Perinatal mental health covers the emotional challenges that can show up in that window: anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, a birth that felt frightening or overwhelming, and the identity shifts that come with becoming a parent.
It's common. Roughly 1 in 5 new mothers experience a perinatal mood or anxiety condition, and it affects fathers and partners too. It's also very treatable. If the early days of parenthood feel harder or darker than you expected, that's not a personal failing. It's a reason to reach out.
